SSANU-NASU Strike Hinders Academic, Administrative Activities At ABU

The strike action embarked upon by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) has crippled academic and administrative activities at the ABU Zaria.

It would be recalled that the JAC has directed for an indefinite strike action on Friday, May 1, 2026.

Our Correspondent revealed that the Senate Building, Library and Sickbay of the University were locked up as a result of the nationwide strike embarked upon by the Unions..

Similarly, the Works and Estate Department were also locked up, thereby disrupting both water and power supplies in the university.

Further investigation revealed that the strike was coming at a period the students were writing their first semester examination but classrooms and lectures theatre remained closed.

Addressing journalists during a peaceful protest at the main campus of the university, Comrade Shuaibu Ahmed Halilu, Chairman SSANU, ABU branch said the strike was in compliance with the directive of the national body of the union.

He said the strike was total, comprehensive and indefinite which disrupts both academic and administrative activities of the university.

Halilu who is also the JAC Chairman of SSANU-NASU said further that “as you can see we are at the central administrative block of the university and it is empty. There is no light, no water and no health care provision in the university.”

He added that SSANU-NASU were not rival groups to ASUU but partners in progress, stressing that “we are demanding for equity.”

The Chairman explained that the strike action was hinged on five demands including salary increase, arrears, payment of earned allowances and the renegotiation and approval of 2009 agreement.

Others are better funding for universities towards improving infrastructure and security as well as rejection of 30 per cent consolidated salary increase.
