Man City Could Owe Premier League Rivals £528m In Prize Money

According to a report by FootballTransfers on Monday, September 28, 2026, Manchester City could potentially owe Premier League rivals a combined £527.9 million in prize money if the financial breaches they have been found guilty of result in compensation.

Reports have claimed that City were found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League over alleged breaches of its financial rules. However, the club’s eventual punishment and whether rivals would receive compensation remain unclear.

A study by OLBG calculated how much additional central merit payments other Premier League clubs could have received if City had not been part of the competition during the period covered by the charges, from the 2011/12 season to 2025/26.

The figures are hypothetical and do not represent an existing debt or confirmed compensation order.

City received an estimated £558 million in merit payments over the period, more than any other Premier League club. Arsenal followed with £504 million, while Liverpool received approximately £499 million.

According to the study, Everton would have received the largest additional payment if City’s figures were removed, with an estimated £28.9 million.

Manchester United would be next on £28.1 million, while West Ham United would have received approximately £28.09 million.

Crystal Palace and Newcastle United could also be due more than £26 million, while Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal are each estimated to have missed out on more than £21 million.

In total, 14 clubs could have been entitled to at least £20 million under the study’s calculations.

The report stresses that the £527.9 million figure does not mean Manchester City currently owe that amount. Any financial liability would depend on the outcome of the Premier League case and the sanctions eventually imposed.

Possible punishments reported in connection with the case include a points deduction, relegation or a significant financial penalty, although the final outcome remains subject to the relevant proceedings.
