Iran Reportedly Announces Major Gas Discovery Valued at Tens of Billions of Dollars
According to a report by Al Jazeera English on Sunday August 23, 2026, Iran has announced the discovery of a major natural gas reserve in the southern part of the country, with officials estimating the deposit could be worth tens of billions of dollars.
According to Iran’s Fars news agency, the newly identified reserves contain more than 7.5 trillion cubic feet of gas, equivalent to roughly 212 billion cubic metres.
Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad said approximately 5.7 trillion cubic feet, or about 161 billion cubic metres, could ultimately be recovered. That volume would be comparable to around 15 years of production from a single development phase of Iran’s giant South Pars gas field.
The discovery is located in Fars province, an area that has become increasingly important to Iran’s energy sector.
Officials said the field is not limited to natural gas. It also contains substantial quantities of gas condensate, a valuable hydrocarbon that can be processed into petroleum products.
Paknejad described the combined resources as a potentially important economic asset for Iran, saying they could provide the country with “a new source of wealth.”
The announcement comes as Iran faces heavy economic pressure from the United States, including threatened new sanctions aimed at restricting Tehran’s energy revenues and access to international markets.
That makes the discovery particularly significant for Iran, which relies heavily on its vast oil and gas resources but has faced difficulties attracting foreign investment and expanding production because of sanctions.
Iran possesses some of the world’s largest natural gas reserves, with South Pars accounting for a substantial share of its production. Yet sanctions and restrictions on foreign technology have limited the pace at which Tehran has been able to develop some of its fields.
The newly announced deposit could therefore provide a long-term boost to Iran’s domestic energy supply and potentially strengthen its position in regional gas markets, provided the necessary infrastructure and investment can be secured.
