Academic activities at Gombe State University may continue without an immediate disruption after the institution’s branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) suspended its planned industrial action.
The decision was reached during the union’s congress on Friday, August 21, 2026, following a review of developments surrounding agreements reached with the Gombe State Government and the university management.
Instead of proceeding with the proposed total and indefinite strike, the lecturers agreed to give the authorities until the end of October 2026 to fulfil their commitments.
Among the matters considered by the congress was the state government’s communication on the commencement of the new salary scale for academic staff.
The union also reviewed a Memorandum of Understanding reached with the university management on the payment of outstanding arrears owed to members.
Following its deliberations, the congress resolved to suspend the planned strike and allow the government and university management additional time to implement the agreements.
However, the union made it clear that the suspension was conditional and did not amount to a permanent withdrawal of the planned industrial action.
ASUU warned that it would proceed with the strike if the commitments contained in the relevant documents were not implemented within the stipulated period.
The resolution announcing the decision was signed by the branch Chairperson, Mustapha Muhammad, and Secretary, Aliyu Shelleng.
The suspension therefore gives the authorities until October to address the issues raised by the union and avert the resumption of the planned industrial action.
