According to a report by Daily Post on Friday August 14 2026 Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in the UEFA Super Cup has added another layer to the ongoing battle for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award.
The French champions continued their remarkable run by securing another European trophy against Aston Villa. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave PSG the lead during the first half, but Brian Madjo responded before the break to bring the English side back into the contest.
PSG eventually regained control after the interval when Desire Doué found the decisive goal. His strike secured another trophy for the Parisian club and further demonstrated why several of their players remain under consideration for individual honours.
Harry Kane remains among the leading favourites after producing exceptional numbers for Bayern Munich. The England international finished the campaign with 73 goals and helped Bayern claim a domestic double before reaching the Champions League semi-finals.
Ousmane Dembele continues to have a strong case after another outstanding year. The PSG forward, who currently holds the Ballon d’Or, scored six goals for France at the World Cup, including a hat-trick against Norway. PSG’s latest European success has also strengthened his bid to retain the award.
Lamine Yamal remains another serious contender after helping Barcelona win LaLiga and the Supercopa de España. Spain’s achievements at the World Cup have also contributed to his impressive résumé, although his individual influence during the tournament was not as significant as some of his rivals.
Rodri is also among the leading names in the race. The Manchester City midfielder won the World Cup Golden Ball after featuring in all eight matches for Spain. He also collected the Carabao Cup and FA Cup with City, although the club missed out on the Premier League and Champions League.
Kylian Mbappé completes the current top five after another remarkable individual campaign. The Real Madrid forward scored 10 goals and provided four assists at the World Cup, while his Golden Boot successes in LaLiga, the Champions League and the World Cup further strengthened his credentials. However, the lack of major team trophies could ultimately work against him.
