Wike’s Rainbow Coalition Suffers Fresh Setback as APC Governors Take Decision Ahead of 2027
According to a report by PM News on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have reaffirmed their commitment to the ruling party and ruled out political arrangements outside the APC that could undermine its prospects in the 2027 general elections.
The governors said they would back only candidates contesting under the APC platform, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the party prepares for the next election cycle.
The position was announced by the Chairman of the APC Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, following a meeting of the governors in Abuja on Monday night.
Uzodimma disclosed that the forum had not reached any formal understanding with opposition political parties or individuals ahead of the 2027 polls.
The declaration comes against the backdrop of efforts by FCT Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Nyesom Wike, to build what has been described as a “Rainbow Coalition” involving politicians from different parties.
Wike has maintained that the proposed coalition is intended to unite politicians across party lines around common political interests ahead of the 2027 elections.
The APC governors, however, made it clear that their allegiance remains with the ruling party and its officially sponsored candidates.
While presenting the communiqué from their meeting, Uzodimma said the governors had agreed not to participate in or endorse any political arrangement that could weaken the APC or jeopardise Tinubu’s bid for another term.
“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma stated.
He added that the forum would not support candidates contesting elections outside the APC, stressing that the party is responsible for sponsoring its candidates.
“The forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate because our candidates who are contesting the election are being sponsored by our party,” he said.
Uzodimma further explained that the governors would structure their campaign efforts around the broader objectives of the APC and the priorities of the Tinubu administration.
He said the governors’ campaign activities would focus exclusively on APC candidates, with the party’s campaign structure operating in accordance with the President’s expectations and the strategic direction of the party.
The governors’ position comes at a time of increasing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 elections, with politicians across party lines exploring possible alliances and realignments.
Wike’s proposed Rainbow Coalition has particularly attracted attention as politicians consider new political partnerships ahead of the elections.
The APC Governors Forum’s latest declaration, however, indicates that the governors intend to maintain party loyalty and ensure that their political support remains focused on candidates officially presented by the APC.
