The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) University, Uyo branch has joined other branches nationwide to embark on a two-week warning strike to press home their demands for federal government to redeem unfulfilled promises and agreements tailored at improving the universities standards in Nigeria.
This warning strike is against threat by the federal government of no-work-no-pay to lecturers who go on strike.
Meanwhile, academic and social activities of the University of Uyo have been paralyzed following the two weeks warning strike which began by 12 midnight of Sunday, October 12, 2025 nationwide.
Our correspondent who visited the two campuses of the University of Uyo, reports that no lecture was going on as the classrooms were empty. Lecturers and students were seen standing in clusters discussing about the strike.
The students who spoke on condition of anonymity lamented thus: ”I came early this morning to submit my assignment but discovered that the university has joined the strike already, so there’s nothing I can do than to return home.”
The chairman of ASUU, University of Uyo branch, Professor Olajide Opeyemi who spoke with our correspondent said that ASUU has fully joined the strike
He added that “the strike has kicked off officially through our procedures and congress resolutions. It was a directive from the national body of our union.”
