Trump says he has a ‘big decision coming up’ regarding whether or not to ‘annihilate’ Iran
According to the Jerusalem Post, US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he faces a big decision over whether the United States should resume large-scale military operations against Iran as Washington considers its next steps in the ongoing conflict.
Speaking in an interview with Axios, Trump said he was weighing whether to intensify attacks against the Iranian regime or take a different approach, describing the situation as a big decision for his administration.
“I have a big decision coming up. Do I want to go in and annihilate them, or do I not? It’s a big decision. Anything could happen with me.”
Trump’s comments come as the US continues to maintain military forces in the Middle East and exert economic and maritime pressure on Iran. According to Axios, Washington is approaching a critical point in deciding whether renewed military action could be used to bring the conflict to an end.
The comments were made ahead of Trump’s planned meeting with leaders from six Gulf countries on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The countries due to participate are Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. Trump said he intends to hear directly from the Gulf leaders about the security situation and their concerns before making the next step on US policy.
“I want to find out where they are and how they are doing. We have been very protective of them.”
The meeting could influence whether the US chooses to pursue further diplomatic efforts or move towards a further escalation of military operations.
Trump has previously expressed his desire to see the conflict end while warning Iran that continued resistance could lead to additional US military action. His latest comments suggest that returning to major combat operations remains an option.
According to Axios, the US has continued its naval blockade of Iranian ports, intensified sanctions pressure and maintained military forces in the region while seeking to increase oil and tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
US officials have stated that the current military position cannot continue indefinitely without a decision about the direction of the conflict.
Trump has not disclosed whether he expects to make the decision before or after the US midterm elections.
His latest remarks represent another firm warning towards Iran but did not provide a specific timeline for possible military action or explain the circumstances which would lead to renewed major strikes.
For now, the administration is considering military, economic and diplomatic options as it seeks to determine how to end the conflict while continuing to pressure Tehran.
Trump’s statement that “Anything could happen with me” leaves open the possibility of renewed US military action with the planned meeting with Gulf leaders offering further insight into Washington’s next steps.
