Since 1999, I Don’t Think There Has Been Any Northerner Who Has Become A Governor – Mohammed Reveals
In a recent interview on Channels TV aired Monday, August 24, 2026, Zakari Mohammed, the ADC gubernatorial candidate in Kwara State, spoke about the upcoming 2027 governorship election and the increasing demand for broader political representation in the state.
Mohammed highlighted a key concern, noting, “Since 1999, I don’t believe any northerner has held the position of governor in Kwara.” He emphasized that given the state’s political background, discussions around zoning and inclusive governance are essential as the election approaches.
He stressed that democracy should go beyond mere population advantage and instead foster cooperation among all regions. According to him, no single zone in Kwara can stand alone in producing a governor, which underscores the need for mutual support across areas.
While affirming that Kwara North deserves fair consideration, he cautioned against compromising competence. He urged voters to prioritize candidates with proven experience, sound governance knowledge, and the ability to lead the state effectively.
Mohammed also drew attention to the underdeveloped infrastructure in Kwara North, calling for targeted government intervention. He pointed out that the region holds untapped economic potential that, if properly harnessed, could significantly boost the state’s overall development.
Additionally, he noted Kwara’s strategic proximity to the Benin Republic as a valuable asset for trade, agriculture, and revenue expansion. With the right investments, he believes these sectors could play a major role in strengthening the state’s economy.
In closing, Mohammed stated that the 2027 election should be a chance for citizens to elect a capable leader who can unite Kwara while ensuring every region feels represented and included.
