Pump Manipulation Widespread Across Nigerian Filling Stations

Consumers across Nigeria are reporting widespread manipulation of fuel pumps at filling stations, resulting in significant financial losses.

Investigations reveal that attendants frequently adjust meters to under-dispense Premium Motor Spirit (petrol), particularly at independent stations.

Multiple incidents confirm this trend. In Lagos, a customer was billed ₦22,000 for ₦20,000 worth of fuel. In Cross River, tests showed variations in dispensed quantities, with some pumps delivering only 0.87 liters for a one-liter purchase.

Similar complaints emerged from Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, and Kebbi states, where commercial drivers and okada riders reported consistent short-changing.

Major marketers like NNPC, BOVAS, and MRS generally maintain accurate meters, earning greater public trust. However, independent stations often sell at higher prices while manipulating pumps. Despite consuming 50 million liters daily nationwide, regulatory oversight remains inadequate. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) lacks sufficient personnel to monitor stations effectively, leaving consumers vulnerable.

Kebbi State has established a committee to address these violations, but broader national enforcement is urgently needed to protect consumers from exploitation.
