According to a statement shared on the official Instagram page of Olusoji Jacobs on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced the death in an Instagram post, a development that has triggered an outpouring of grief across Nigeria’s entertainment industry and among the many viewers who followed the actor’s remarkable career over the years.

Olu Jacobs was widely regarded as one of the prominent figures in Nigerian theatre and film. His career spanned several decades, during which he established himself as a respected actor whose performances reached audiences in Nigeria, across Africa and internationally. His death marks the end of a long and influential career in the performing arts.

Born in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Jacobs spent part of his childhood in Kano before travelling to the United Kingdom to pursue professional training in acting. He studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, a renowned institution that has trained numerous actors for careers in theatre, television and film.

Jacobs began his professional acting career in British television and film before eventually returning to Nigeria. Following his return, he became an important presence in the Nigerian entertainment industry, appearing in numerous stage productions and films and earning recognition for his versatility and commanding performances.

Over the course of his career, Jacobs became particularly known for his deep voice, distinctive delivery and strong presence on screen. He successfully portrayed a wide range of characters, moving between serious dramatic roles and other forms of storytelling with the experience he had gained from both British and Nigerian productions.

His body of work included Nigerian productions as well as international projects, helping him establish a reputation that extended beyond Nollywood. His career also developed alongside the rapid growth of Nigeria’s film industry, making him one of the familiar and respected faces associated with the evolution of Nigerian cinema.

Throughout his decades in the profession, Jacobs received several awards and honours in recognition of his contribution to acting, theatre and African cinema. His achievements reflected not only his individual talent but also the influence of experienced performers in shaping the Nigerian film industry as it developed into a major entertainment sector.

Away from his individual career, Olu Jacobs was also widely recognised for his marriage to veteran actress Joke Silva. The two became one of Nigeria’s most prominent entertainment couples, with both maintaining successful careers in theatre and film while becoming familiar figures to generations of Nigerian audiences.

The announcement of Jacobs’ death is expected to be deeply felt across Nollywood and the wider African entertainment community, particularly among actors, filmmakers and theatre practitioners who worked with him, learned from his career or regarded him as an important figure in the industry.

For many years, Olu Jacobs remained a symbol of experience and professionalism in Nigerian acting. His performances, awards and contribution to theatre and film have left behind a body of work that will continue to form part of the history of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

He leaves behind decades of performances and a legacy built through years of dedication to the arts. His contribution to Nigerian theatre and cinema remains an important part of the story of the country’s entertainment industry. May his soul rest in peace.
