Over 281 million migrants reside outside their countries of origin and more than 169 are moving around in search of sustainable livelihoods and enhanced economic opportunities.
This was revealed by the zonal director of the Federal Ministry of Labour and employment Mr. Abdullahi Aliyu during a capacity development workshop for Northwest members of the Nigerian Migration Advisory Network held in Kano.
Mr. Aliyu explained that thousands of vibrant and talented young individuals are actively seeking pathways to advance their education, acquire modern skills and secure meaningful employment locally and internationally.
He further added that the ministry remain resolutely committed to mitigating these risks by building and institutionalizing a robust framework rooted in safe, regular and orderly labor mobility.
He said through the Migrant Resources Centers, MRCs, and the foundational work established via the Nigerian-German Centre for Migrants and Development, NGC, the ministry has made significant strides in providing counseling to potential returning migrants not only in Abuja but across high-migrant states and regions nationwide.
The zonal director said that the ministry has been partnering with key international unions such as those of Germany and broader European Union and ECOWAS among others, aimed at achieving the desired objectives.
Highlights of the event include presentation of various papers by the representatives of International Labour Organization, ILO, among others.
A communique is expected to be issued at the end of the workshop.
