According to a report by BBC Sport on Friday, September 11, 2026, Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup have suffered a major setback after Canada secured a convincing victory over Tanzania.
Canada produced an impressive performance to defeat Tanzania 6-0 in their final Group B match. The result moved Canada to four points and placed them above several teams currently competing for the four best third-placed positions that qualify for the Round of 16.
The result is particularly significant for Nigeria, who are currently third in Group F with one point after playing out a goalless draw with China in their second group game. Nigeria had previously lost 2-0 to Spain in their opening fixture.
The Falconets would have preferred Canada and Tanzania to share the points because a draw would have made Nigeria’s qualification calculations easier. Instead, Canada’s big victory has strengthened their position among the teams fighting for the best third-placed spots.
Nigeria, however, still have their destiny partly in their own hands. A victory over New Caledonia in their final group match would take the Falconets to four points, the same total Canada have now reached.
Their goal difference could then become extremely important in determining whether they finish among the four best third-placed teams.
Nigeria currently have a goal difference of minus two, while New Caledonia have already conceded 16 goals in two matches.
A convincing victory could therefore significantly improve Nigeria’s goal difference and boost their chances of progressing.
With the top two teams in each group and the four best third-placed teams advancing to the Round of 16, Nigeria know that nothing less than a strong result against New Caledonia may be enough to keep their World Cup dream alive.
