Buba Galadima, a prominent figure in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), warned that appointing a controversial retired Court of Appeal judge as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could push Nigeria toward civil war.
In an Arise News interview, Galadima expressed alarm over rumors that the government is considering this person, known for notoriety, to lead INEC, signaling a dangerous politicization of the electoral process.
He criticized INEC’s inability to regulate political actors, noting that he had raised concerns repeatedly over the past six months. He argued that INEC lacks the authority to enforce rules, as the government influences its actions, undermining its independence.
The issue of premature campaigning, initiated by the ruling government, further illustrates INEC’s weakness, as it fails to curb violations.
Galadima emphasized that the commission cannot function impartially in today’s polarized political environment, where those in power dictate its actions.
In his words, “INEC cannot be an empire in a political environment as we have today. If they don’t have the liver to even say please don’t, we have not yet allowed politicians to start.”
“There are rumors all over the place that this government is nominating a just-retired court of appeal judge who is known for notoriety to be the chairman of INEC. I wish it is not true because if that man becomes the chairman of INEC, be rest assured that this government is inviting a civil war in this country.”
