Excitement in the air as Ibom Airline successfully commenced its maiden international flight from Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria to Kotoka international Airport in Accra, Ghana on Saturday.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo described the Victor Attah International Airport as a trailblazer in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
Keyamo, who spoke at the commencement ceremony in Uyo, also described the airport as not just another airport but one that has the unique advantage of transferring their flights from international to international; domestic to international; and international to domestic.
According to him, such unique advantage is not offered by any other airport in Nigeria, saying, Akwa Ibom State was gradually transforming into a Dubai in Nigeria given its superlative infrastructural renaissance and the impact on the region and the country.
“This Airport is not just a terminal building but a world-class transit hub with immense impact. Its operational model places it ahead of others in the nation’s aviation landscape,” Keyamo said.
Keyamo, who also lauded the infrastructural strides of Akwa Ibom State, likened its development trajectory to that of Dubai, citing the transformative impact of ongoing projects on both the state and the wider Nigerian economy.
The Aviation Minister applauded Governor Umo Eno for his commitment to completing the Airport project and actualising its international status, noting that the development would yield significant economic benefits.
In his speech on the occasion, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Eno attributed the airport’s success to the collective efforts of past administrations, describing the achievement as a product of sustained visionary leadership.
“It was indeed a relay race of impactful leadership, from Obong Victor Attah, to Chief Godswill Akpabio, to Mr. Udom Emmanuel, and to me,” he said while acknowledging the contributions of his predecessors.
Eno also thanked President Bola Tinubu for supporting sub-national infrastructure development through timely release of funds, which he noted has facilitated the completion of the airport upgrade.
The Commissioner for Finance and Supervising Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Emem Bob lauded the Governor’s determination in upgrading the airport, while key stakeholders in the aviation and construction sectors commended the administration for overcoming challenges to deliver a world-class facility.
Top government officials, including the Deputy Governor, Senator Akon Eyakenyi; the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong; and other members of the State Executive Council graced the occasion with a plethora of political leaders, clergy, and stakeholders.
Meanwhile, the launch of the international operations from Victor Attah International Airport by Ibom Air marks a strategic inflection point for Nigeria’s aviation economy, as the state positions itself to capture value from an outbound travel market estimated at over $5 billion annually.
Nigeria’s international travel demand is among the highest in Africa. Data from industry bodies and aviation analysts indicate that Nigerians spend between $4 billion and $6 billion each year on foreign air travel, tickets, medical trips, education, and tourism. A large portion of this expenditure accrues to foreign airlines and offshore service systems, resulting in sustained foreign exchange outflows and limited domestic value retention.
Akwa Ibom’s aviation expansion, therefore, seeks to reverse part of this imbalance. With direct regional connectivity now operational from Victor Attah International Airport to Kotoka International Airport, Nigeria gains an additional international gateway outside Lagos and Abuja.
The development is also significant for Ibom Air. Since commencing operations in 2019, the airline has built a reputation around schedule reliability and service efficiency within the domestic market. Its transition into regional international routes represents a critical scale-up phase, positioning it to compete within West Africa’s short-haul aviation segment.
However, the long-term impact will depend on execution variables. Route sustainability, load factors, pricing competitiveness, and regulatory coordination will determine whether Nigerian carriers can effectively displace foreign operators on regional routes. Bilateral air service agreements and aviation policy coherence remain critical to this outcome, Aviation analysts said.
