According to Arise TV, prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart Chief Bode George has offered a historical analysis of Nigeria’s political development, highlighting the repeated collapse of past republics and the urgent need to address lingering structural weaknesses.
Speaking during an in-depth interview, George emphasized that Nigeria’s democratic path has been shaped by painful lessons from the First and Second Republics. He explained that both eras were undermined by the dominance of majority groups while minority voices were sidelined, a pattern that contributed to instability and eventual collapse. “The founding fathers recognized the danger in allowing only the majority to dictate outcomes while others stood as spectators. That imbalance was a major factor in the fall of our earlier republics,” he noted.
George further argued that the challenges facing the country today are not entirely new but are deeply rooted in its colonial heritage. He pointed out that the legacies of tribalism and religious division, introduced and exploited during British rule, remain obstacles to building a cohesive nation. “”And then I told you people before, and I will repeat it, that when the British left this country, they left two evils: tribalism and religious bigotry,” George declared.
On the subject of Nigeria’s current governance structure, George stressed the importance of power-sharing arrangements designed to promote inclusion and prevent domination by any single group. He described such mechanisms as safeguards that, if properly implemented, could strengthen democracy and reduce tensions across regions.
Concluding his remarks, George urged political leaders and citizens alike to move beyond primordial sentiments and embrace genuine unity. He warned that unless tribalism and sectarianism are deliberately confronted, Nigeria risks repeating the mistakes that led to the downfall of its earlier democratic experiments.
