Gusau Out: Presidency Snubs Emenalo, Anoints New NFF President

The future of Ibrahim Musa Gusau as President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) appears increasingly uncertain, with the presidency reportedly backing a new candidate to lead Nigerian football.

According to an exclusive report by OwnGoalNigeria, Gusau’s tenure could come to an end as early as Wednesday if an NFF board member currently abroad returns to Nigeria and formally submits his resignation.

The move would take the number of board members who have resigned to nine out of 12.

Under the NFF statutes, the resignation of nine board members would trigger the dissolution of the board.

Meanwhile, plans are reportedly already in place for the formation of a three-month normalization committee to oversee the affairs of the NFF and organize fresh elections.

The presidency is said to have rejected the proposed appointment of former NFF president Amaju Pinnick to head the committee, with another individual already lined up for the position.

According to the report, the presidency has identified a preferred candidate to become the next NFF president.

His name was reportedly forwarded to the National Sports Commission (NSC), with his previous association with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said to have influenced the choice.

Despite speculation that former Chelsea, Monaco and Saudi Pro League director Mike Emenalo could emerge as the next NFF president, the option was reportedly never considered by the presidency.

Emenalo, a former Nigerian international who represented the country at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, is viewed as an outsider in the current power structure and is believed to lack the level of support enjoyed by the candidate backed by the presidency.

The planned normalization process is therefore expected to pave the way for a fresh NFF election, with the presidency already appearing to have a preferred successor to Gusau.
