Elections: Police Counsels Politicians Against Misuse Of Social Media

By Sani Aliyu, Zaria
Politicians have been advised against unnecessarily heating up the polity through abuse of social media handles by their social media teams as the 2027 general elections activities begin.
ACP Abdurrahman Idris, Area Commander, Zaria Area Police Command, gave the advise when he received Executive Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Zaria Unit in his office on Tuesday in Zaria.
He lamented abuse of the social media handles by some unprofessional practitioners employed by the politicians to promote their political missions.
This unnecessary heating of the polity, according to him, aggravates crime rate and incites violence even before the conduct of the 2027 electioneering activities.
He tasked the NUJ leadership to work with key stakeholders to develop modalities of addressing the challenges.
The Area Commander reiterated the commitment of the police to implement the relevant laws in checkmating cyber crimes such as bullying and stalking among others.
He appreciated the NUJ for sustaining cordial relationship with the Police, adding that it is on record that the command has never had any serious clash with the journalists and hoped that such tempo would be maintained.
Earlier, the Unit Chairman, Alhaji Sagir Muhammad Awwal said the visit was to further cement the existing relationship between the union and the Police preparatory to the 2027 elections.
The chairman noted that the NUJ and Police were partners in progress towards a peace and conflict free nation.
Awwal further sought the support of the Police for additional protection to members of the NUJ in discharging their duties.
