El-Rufai Family Gives Defence Minister Seven Days to Prove Killing Allegation

The family of former Kaduna State Gov. Nasir El-Rufai has given Defence Minister Christopher Musa seven days to provide evidence for his claim that El-Rufai planned killings in Southern Kaduna.

Musa made the allegation on the 3rd of September 2026 during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

He said El-Rufai’s administration created deep divisions in Kaduna State and alleged that people from Southern Kaduna could not freely live in the northern part of the state.

“We can never be happy with somebody who deliberately planned for the killing of our people,” Musa said during the interview.

The minister also referred to videos and speeches in which he claimed El-Rufai spoke about his administration’s dealings with bandits.

The El-Rufai family, however, said the allegation was made without evidence.

In a statement Monday signed by Mohammed Bello El-Rufai on behalf of the family, the family said it had “noted with serious concern” Musa’s allegations.

“This grave allegation was made without the presentation of any evidence in support of the claim,” the family said.

It added that while Musa was entitled to express his personal opinion, the family was “equally entitled to demand that such serious allegations be substantiated with credible evidence.”

The family has asked Musa to either prove the allegation or withdraw it.

“Accordingly, General Musa (Rtd.) is hereby given seven (7) days from the date of this statement to either provide evidence in support of his allegation or issue a full public retraction and apology,” the statement said.

The family warned that failure to do so would leave it with “no option but to pursue all appropriate legal remedies available under the law.”

Musa also accused El-Rufai of deepening ethnic and regional divisions in Kaduna during his tenure.

He said the people of Southern Kaduna remained deeply affected by the violence recorded during the period.

The minister did not present evidence during the interview to support his specific allegation that El-Rufai planned the killings.

The family’s seven-day deadline puts the burden on Musa to substantiate the allegation or face possible legal action.
