Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has directed the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) to urgently eliminate unqualified teachers from classrooms nationwide, emphasizing that the era of mediocrity in Nigeria’s teaching profession must come to an end.
Alausa issued the directive on Friday in Abuja during the inauguration of the 5th Governing Council of the TRCN.
He charged the newly appointed council members to treat their roles as a mission to rescue and elevate the teaching profession, not as ceremonial positions.
“This is not business as usual,” Alausa declared. “You must ensure that every unqualified teacher is removed from our classrooms. Revoke the licenses of those who tarnish the dignity of the profession.
Every Nigerian child deserves to be taught by a certified professional without exception.”
The minister warned that the performance of the council would be monitored rigorously through quarterly evaluations using clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), adding, “No excuses. No extensions. Either deliver or step aside.”
He underscored that the council’s inauguration symbolized more than just fulfilling statutory obligations; it marked a renewed drive to professionalize teaching under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to him, the government is committed to igniting a transformation in the standards and dignity of the teaching workforce.
Alausa referenced global benchmarks, urging Nigeria to emulate countries like Finland where teaching is held in high esteem. “You are here as architects of a new era,” he told the council members.
“No education system can outperform the quality of its teachers. Your task is urgent, and your responsibility is immense.”
He also appealed to stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and communities, to actively participate in ensuring the success of the council’s mission.
“To teachers nationwide: This is your council, own it. To parents and communities: Hold us accountable. The time for rhetoric is over; the work begins now.”
Quoting Aristotle, Alausa reminded the council that true education nurtures both the mind and the heart, stressing that unity of purpose is essential to ensuring every Nigerian child is taught by a qualified, inspired, and TRCN-certified teacher.
He concluded by invoking divine guidance for the council’s deliberations, expressing hope for a revitalized education system that meets the aspirations of all Nigerians.
