According to a report by TheCable on Thursday, September 11, 2025, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced that it will commence the direct delivery of petrol across Nigeria starting September 15, a move expected to significantly reshape the country’s fuel supply chain.
In a brief statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, the $20 billion refinery said it was ready to begin large-scale distribution, ensuring that petrol reaches filling stations across the nation without intermediaries. The initiative, it noted, will mark a new phase in the refinery’s operations and in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
Located in the Lekki Free Zone in Lagos, the 650,000-barrels-per-day facility is Africa’s largest oil refinery and one of the world’s biggest single-train refineries. Commissioned earlier this year, it was designed to meet Nigeria’s domestic demand for petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, and other refined products, while also creating the capacity to export to neighboring countries.
The announcement comes amid rising concerns about fuel distribution bottlenecks, high transport costs, and persisting volatility in petrol prices. By delivering directly to retail outlets, the refinery is expected to cut out middlemen, reduce logistical costs, and improve efficiency across the supply chain. Analysts believe the move could ease the burden on consumers, who have faced frequent shortages and price fluctuations in recent years.
Nigeria, despite being Africa’s largest crude oil producer, has long struggled with domestic refining capacity, forcing the country to rely heavily on imported petroleum products. The opening of the Dangote Refinery was hailed as a potential game-changer, promising not only to end dependence on imports but also to stabilize fuel supply and strengthen Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves by reducing import bills.
