Certificate Forgery No Longer Crime In Nigerian Politics So Atiku Is Just Wasting His Time — Charanchi
In a recent interview with The Sun on Saturday, August 29, 2026, National Coordinator of the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, has expressed doubts over the legal action filed by ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar against President Bola Tinubu over allegations of certificate forgery.
Speaking on the matter, Charanchi stated that he does not believe the court case will produce the outcome Atiku is seeking, according to him, recent developments in the country have weakened public confidence in the independence of key institutions, including the judiciary.
The CNG leader argued that many Nigerians view government institutions as being heavily influenced by those in power, he claimed that this perception has created skepticism about the ability of the courts to make decisions that could significantly affect a sitting president.
Charanchi stated that because Tinubu is the incumbent president, it would be difficult for legal challenges against him to succeed, he maintained that repeated court actions on the same issue are unlikely to change the political situation in the country.
He referred to provisions of Nigeria’s electoral laws, arguing that they have made disputes relating to academic credentials less effective as political weapons, according to him, the current legal framework does not create enough consequences to discourage controversies surrounding certificates and qualifications in politics.
The northern activist stated that Atiku may be spending valuable time and resources on a legal battle that is unlikely to deliver meaningful results, he suggested that opposition politicians should focus more on political engagement, grassroots mobilisation and addressing issues that directly affect citizens.
”Tinubu is the government. So even if you take Tinubu hundred times to the court, nothing different will happen. Even at that, there is a provision in the electoral act that ridicules the issue of certificate forgery. From the Act, certificate forgery is no longer a crime in Nigerian politics. So, Atiku is just wasting his time,” he said.
