There are moments in the life of an institution when the greatest danger is not failure, but the unwillingness to change. When the same methods are repeatedly applied and the same outcomes continue to confront an organisation, wisdom demands a new approach, fresh ideas and courageous leadership.
As the Nigeria Basketball Federation approaches its forthcoming Congress and presidential election in October 2026, the basketball community should be asking a fundamental question: what kind of leadership can take Nigerian basketball from where it is to where it ought to be?
It is within this context that Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi should seriously consider throwing his hat into the ring for the presidency of the NBBF.
The case for Dr. Abdullahi begins with innovation. His involvement with the DAM Foundation Championship, hosted every December in Okene, provides a practical demonstration of his ability to create and sustain initiatives around basketball.
The championship has become a platform through which players and the wider basketball community can experience competition, exposure and opportunity. It is an indication of a mind that does not merely talk about development, but is willing to invest ideas, resources and energy in creating platforms that advance the game.
Equally significant is his accessibility. Leadership in sports should never become detached from the athletes and people whose sacrifices sustain the game.
A president of the NBBF must be approachable to players, coaches, officials, staff and stakeholders and must understand that welfare is not an afterthought but a fundamental pillar of sustainable sports development.
Dr. Abdullahi’s record, both in his capacity as Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria and through his interactions with players who have participated in the DAM Foundation Championship, points to a leadership style that values people.
His emergence at the federation would therefore offer a credible prospect for placing the welfare of players and staff much higher on the administrative agenda.
His commitment to the basketball community also extends beyond organising competitions. Through magnanimous donations and tangible support for members of the basketball family, he has demonstrated that his relationship with the sport is not merely transactional.
His efforts to facilitate employment opportunities for people within the community, including opportunities in the federal civil service, further demonstrate an understanding that basketball development is ultimately about human beings.
A strong federation must not only produce athletes; it must create pathways through which athletes, officials and other stakeholders can build dignified and sustainable lives.
There is, therefore, a compelling argument for thinking outside the box. The NBBF cannot afford to continue doing the same things repeatedly while expecting a radically different outcome.
Nigerian basketball possesses enormous talent, but talent alone cannot build a globally competitive basketball system. The federation requires new thinking around grassroots development, competitions, player welfare, sponsorship, infrastructure, commercialisation, talent identification and international engagement.
Dr. Abdullahi’s wealth of ideas and exposure acquired through travels within and outside Africa could bring new perspectives to these challenges and help the federation examine successful models beyond its traditional operating environment.
