The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has dismissed claims that he is locked in a supremacy battle with the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, or any other monarch in Yorubaland.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin made it clear that his reign is focused on protecting Yoruba tradition, ensuring the welfare of his people, and promoting peace rather than competing with fellow monarchs.
The controversy began earlier in the week after the Alaafin faulted Ooni Ogunwusi’s decision to confer the title of Okanlomo of Oduwa on businessman Dotun Sanusi during the launch of a new indigenous social media platform in Ibadan.
Reacting to the development, Oba Owoade said he had no reason to engage in any contest of superiority, stressing that history has already established the relevance and authority of the Oyo throne. He added that his leadership is guided by the principles of humility, culture, and service to the people.
The monarch also recalled the deep historical roots of the Alaafin stool, highlighting its recognition as the political and cultural head of the Yoruba nation during the pre-colonial era. He noted that the Oyo Empire once stood as one of the strongest in West Africa, thriving on trade, military prowess, and diplomacy.
According to him, the position of Alaafin has always been tied to tradition, the Oduduwa dynasty, and a commitment to safeguarding the Yoruba identity. He described himself as a custodian of culture who will never compromise the values of his ancestors for personal gain.
Oba Owoade reiterated his covenant with Yoruba forebears to defend and uphold their heritage, assuring that his administration remains committed to the prosperity, security, and progress of his people.
