The Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) has transported over four million passengers within 15 months of resuming commercial operations in May 2024.
Zhuang Yanhui, Deputy General Manager of CCECC Rail Operations, who disclosed in Abuja highlighted the system’s increasing use by residents of territory.
Yanhui said the service has maintained over 450 consecutive days of uninterrupted operation, reinforcing its role as a key mode of transport in Abuja.
In a related development, Nigeria recently welcomed its first batch of locally trained rail operators. The training, which included a component in China, was followed by the launch of a domestic rail operations training programme in Abuja to strengthen local technical expertise.
At a ceremony attended by officials from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), stakeholders described the initiative as a step toward improved knowledge transfer and sustainable rail operations.
Zhuang commended the trainees for their efforts, noting that the programme would support skill development in areas such as train dispatch, station management, maintenance, and safety.
“This ceremony is not just about training; it marks the beginning of knowledge transfer, local involvement, and sustainable operations for the ARMT,” he said.
He also acknowledged the support of the FCTA, stating that the project aims to build not only infrastructure but also long-term operational capacity through local expertise.
With rising ridership and a focus on skills development, the Abuja Rail Mass Transit is increasingly seen as a model for urban transport in West Africa.
Stakeholders have expressed their commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, efficiency, and service as the system continues to grow.
