Abacha Created Geopolitical Zones; What Is Wrong With It That You Want To Create More Zones? – Dokubo
According to a video shared on Facebook on Saturday, August 29, 2026, Niger Delta activist and traditional ruler, Asari Dokubo, discussed Nigeria’s geopolitical structure and questioned proposals to create additional zones.
Dokubo referenced the administration of the late military ruler, Sani Abacha, which established Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. He questioned why there should be a push to create more zones when the existing structure is already in place.
The activist stated, “Abacha created six geopolitical zones; what is wrong with it that you want to create more zones?” while expressing his reservations about further restructuring Nigeria’s geopolitical arrangement.
According to Dokubo, the six geopolitical zones provide a framework for regional representation and should not be expanded without a compelling reason. He suggested that attention should instead be directed toward making the existing structure work effectively.
He argued that continually creating new zones could complicate the country’s administrative and political structure without necessarily addressing the underlying challenges facing Nigerians.
Dokubo’s comments come amid continuing discussions about political restructuring, representation and the possibility of creating additional administrative or geopolitical arrangements in Nigeria.
He concluded by questioning the rationale behind calls for more geopolitical zones, maintaining that the six-zone structure created under Abacha should be properly examined before considering further changes.
