In the annals of service, there are those who seek the spotlight, and then there are those like Dr. Bashir Hadi Ashara, the silent achievers who simply see a need and fill it, asking for nothing but the chance to be useful. Today, we bid farewell not just to a scholar or an elder statesman, but to a golden heart that beat tirelessly for Islam, for knowledge, and for community.
Dr. Ashara walked many paths, yet he wore every title with the same cloak of humility. As a professional journalist and Head of Department of Mass Communication at the prestigious Kaduna Polytechnic, he wasn’t merely teaching a curriculum; he was shaping consciences. He molded young minds to seek truth, to wield the pen with responsibility, and to understand that communication, at its highest level, is a form of service. His legacy lives on in every journalist and media professional he mentored who now upholds integrity in the field.
But his scholarship was never confined to the lecture hall. His true monument is the community of Unguwar Sanusi. Dr. Ashara was not a distant figurehead; he was a present force in every developmental role of transformation. Whether it was a dispute needing wisdom, a project needing coordination, or a soul needing counsel, he was there, quietly, effectively, without fanfare. He labored in the trenches of community development, proving that true leadership is not a title, but a verb.
His devotion to his faith was the compass of his life. Until his very last breath, he served as the Secretary of the Danfodio Juma’at Mosque, a role that required diligence, trust, and a profound sense of accountability before Allah. He understood that the house of God is the heart of the Ummah, and he kept its affairs with the same meticulous care he gave to his profession.
To know Dr. Bashir was to know simplicity and gentleness. In a world often hardened by ego, he was a soft-spoken pillar. He was the man who resolved conflicts without raising his voice, who gave without recording the deed, who led without lording over others. He was, in every sense, a prominent stakeholder of repute, not because he sought power, but because his character naturally drew people to trust him.
We will miss the quiet strength of his presence. The mosque will feel his absence at the secretary’s desk. The streets of Unguwar Sanusi will miss the silent architect of their progress. And the nation has lost a man who demonstrated how Islam serves humanity—not with noise, but with action.
But let us not mourn as those without hope. Let us be inspired. Let Dr. Ashara’s life be a challenge to us all: to serve where we are, to lead with humility, and to build our communities one silent act of kindness at a time.
May Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds as a weighty currency on his scale, and grant him the highest station in Jannah. May He grant his family, the students he loved, and the community of Unguwar Sanusi the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss.
