A Time Is Coming In This Country When The Rich Won’t Sleep Because The Poor Have Not Eaten – Duke
In a report by Daily Post on September 7, 2026, Donald Duke, former governor of Cross River State and presidential candidate for the Peoples Redemption Party, suggested that Nigerians might have had better living conditions during military rule compared to the 27 years of continuous democracy the country has experienced.
He criticized the effectiveness of civilian governance, stating that the extended period of democracy has brought significant economic challenges to citizens without yielding proportional improvements in their lives.
Duke expressed concern about the ongoing hardships facing many Nigerians, pointing out that a large segment of the population still struggles to meet fundamental economic and social needs, despite Nigeria’s abundant resources. He emphasized the growing divide between the wealthy and those in poverty, warning that this rising inequality could threaten national peace and stability if not urgently addressed.
He noted that the current economic environment has led to a society where a small elite enjoys significant wealth while many others find it difficult to meet their daily requirements.
Reflecting on his time with the National Economic Intelligence Committee, Duke recalled warnings about the severe consequences of extreme inequality. He referenced a caution from Professor Aluko, who predicted that a point would come when the suffering of the poor would become impossible for the rich to overlook.
Duke remarked that this warning becomes increasingly relevant as economic strains render basic necessities unaffordable for many. He stated, “There was a time when I used to be in the National Economic Intelligence Committee and Professor Aluko used to say, proverbially, that a time is coming in this country when the rich won’t sleep because the poor have not eaten. I think the time is coming.”
