According to a report by Vanguard on Sunday, September 6, 2026, President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to embrace patriotism and support the emergence of leaders and citizens who will prioritise the public good over personal interests in the pursuit of national development.
The President stressed the need for individuals in positions of responsibility to place the interests of the country above personal ambition, self-aggrandisement and other considerations that could undermine efforts to advance national development.
He said the progress of Nigeria required a strong commitment to values that promote collective welfare and responsible public service.
Tinubu made the call at St. Monica Cathedral of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN), Jimeta, Yola, during a thanksgiving service organised to mark the 70th birthday of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Dr Boss Mustapha.
The event brought together dignitaries and other stakeholders to celebrate the former SGF as he attained the milestone age.
The President used the occasion to emphasise the importance of patriotism, responsible leadership and dedication to the interests of the Nigerian people.
Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, Tinubu urged public officials and citizens to make commitment to public service and the common good a central value in their activities.
He stressed that those entrusted with responsibilities in government and society should conduct themselves in ways that promote the welfare of the wider population.
According to the President, a strong sense of responsibility and dedication to public service remained important to the country’s pursuit of development.
The President further urged Nigerians to recognise the importance of placing national interests above individual aspirations, particularly among those occupying public positions.
He said public officials should understand that their responsibilities extend beyond personal advancement and should instead be directed towards serving the people and contributing to the development of the country.
Tinubu emphasised the need for citizens and leaders to demonstrate a greater sense of commitment to the collective interests of Nigeria.
Tinubu also called for leaders whose decisions and actions would be guided by considerations beyond personal advancement.
He said the country required people who would dedicate themselves to responsibilities that serve the broader interests of society.
The President maintained that patriotism and devotion to public service should remain important principles for anyone seeking to contribute to Nigeria’s development, while urging Nigerians to uphold values that place the common good at the centre of national affairs.
He said, “Nigeria needs men and women who value what transcends personal interest, but rather a devotion to public service.”
