There Will Be Confusion If All States Go To The Market And Import Arms For State Police – Aondoakaa

According to a report by The Cable on Monday, August 31, 2026, former Attorney General of the Federation, Mike Aondoakaa, has cautioned against permitting individual states to independently procure firearms and other military equipment for their proposed state police, warning that such an arrangement could result in disorder and a lack of coordination.

He stressed that the acquisition and distribution of arms and related equipment should remain under a central system of control to ensure effective monitoring and accountability.

Speaking during an interview on Monday, Aondoakaa said the proposed procurement of equipment for state police organisations must be guided by a clearly defined legal framework.

According to him, appropriate laws and regulations are necessary to determine how such equipment would be acquired, distributed and controlled by the various state authorities.

The former Attorney General maintained that allowing each state to determine its own approach to procuring arms could create significant security concerns.

He emphasised the importance of having a coordinated mechanism through which the Federal Government can maintain oversight of weapons and other specialised equipment provided for state policing operations.

Aondoakaa proposed that the National Security Adviser could play a role in establishing or supervising the legal framework governing the procurement of arms and other equipment for state police.

He argued that involving the office would help provide the necessary security oversight and ensure that procurement processes are carried out within an established national structure.

He further stressed the importance of keeping accurate records of arms supplied to each state.

According to him, there must be an effective system for tracking weapons and equipment after they have been procured and delivered to state police formations, such monitoring, he said, would help ensure that the authorities know the quantity and destination of arms supplied to individual states.

He said: “It will be a lot of confusion if a 36 state goes to the market and imports arms for their state police, that we can look at it.”
