What Has The Removal Of Subsidy Gained? The NNPC Can’t Still Account For Its Revenue – Dr. Adum
Former Attorney General of Benue State, Dr. Alex Adum, has questioned the benefits Nigerians have gained from the removal of the fuel subsidy, arguing that some of the problems the policy was expected to address appear to persist despite its implementation.
Speaking during an interview on News Central on Saturday, August 29, 2026, Adum expressed concern over the continued challenges surrounding revenue accountability in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
According to him, the removal of the subsidy was expected to eliminate revenue leakages, reduce corruption and improve transparency in the management of public funds.
However, he argued that Nigerians are yet to see sufficient evidence that the removal of the subsidy has addressed those longstanding problems. He particularly questioned the inability of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to adequately account for its revenues.
In his words, “If the presence of subsidy created revenue leakages, corruption and so on and so forth, what has the removal of subsidy gained?”
Adum said the central issue should not only be about removing subsidy but also about ensuring that the resources saved or generated as a result of the policy are properly accounted for and used to improve the lives of citizens.
He further questioned the continued revenue accountability challenges within the petroleum industry, stressing that the situation raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of the subsidy removal policy. He said, “The NNPC can’t still account for its revenue, that is the problem you know.”
