UNIUYO Appoints Prof Chris Ekong As New Vice Chancellor

The Governing Council of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State has announced Prof Christopher Nyong Ekong as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University after a rigorous and transparent selection process.

Mrs Blossom E. Okorie, who is the Registrar and Secretary to the Council, announced the appointment Thursday, saying that Prof. Ekong passed through extensive scrutiny exercise which included the review of applications, assessment of credentials, and interactions with shortlisted candidates.

“After extensive scrutiny exercise which included the review of applications, assessment of credentials and interactions with shortlisted candidates, the Council approved the appointment of Professor Christopher Nyong Ekong as the 9th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University, effective 16th June, 2026.

“The selection process was conducted in line with established legal framework and guidelines, adopting best practices, ensuring fairness, merit and integrity throughout. Professor Christopher Nyong Ekong emerged as the most suitable candidate, having demonstrated outstanding academic excellence, administrative competence, visionary leadership and a strong commitment to the advancement of the university,” the Registrar added.

Ekong is a Professor in the field of Economics with a proven track record in teaching, research and administration.

Prior to his appointment, Prof Ekong served as chairman, Committee of Deans, a position where he made significant contributions to institutional growth and development.

The Governing Council has expressed confidence that under Professor Christopher Ekong’s watch, the University will continue to advance its mandate of excellence in teaching, research and community service.

Reacting to the appointment, the chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, has congratulated Professor Chris Ekong on his emergence as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the University.

In a goodwill message, Dr. Udo described the appointment by the Governing Council of the institution as a reflection of Professor Ekong’s academic excellence, leadership capacity and commitment to the advancement of higher education.

The Akwa Ibom State ALGON Boss expressed confidence that the new Vice Chancellor’s tenure would usher in a new phase of scholarship, innovation, and institutional growth for the university.

The chairman conveyed the support and goodwill of the government and people of Uyo Local Government Area, noting that the appointment is a proud moment for the academic community, Uyo Local Government and the state at large.
