Nigeria Salutes 106‑Year‑Old WW2 Hero, RSM Wesley Tafida

…On Armed Forces Remembrance Day

RSM Wesley Tafida

As the nation honours its defenders on Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) Wesley Tafida, a 106‑year‑old World War II veteran from Jalingo, has become a symbol of endurance and service after decades of dedication to his country’s military history and heritage.

RSM Tafida marked his 106th birthday on January 10, 2026, an event that fell just days before Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day on January 15, when Nigeria pays tribute to veterans of global conflicts including the Second World War, and to those who have served in defence of the nation.

The annual observance honours the sacrifice and courage of servicemen and women, and reflects on the nation’s military heritage following the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970.

Born in the early 1920s, Tafida served during the Second World War with distinction.

Historical accounts of his service describe how he acted as a courier conveying arms and ammunition during the years 1944 to 1945, a role that placed him at the heart of wartime logistics and exemplified his commitment to duty.

After seven years of service, he was honourably discharged from the 93 Mechanised Infantry Battalion, Ojo Cantonment, having earned the respect of comrades and commanders alike.

To mark his birthday and long service, senior officers from the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke paid a solidarity visit to Tafida in Jalingo.

Brigadier General Kingsley Uwa, leading the delegation, praised Tafida’s legacy of discipline, courage and resilience, describing them as qualities that continue to inspire serving troops and veterans.

For his family, the celebration was particularly poignant. RSM Tafida is the father of Major General Henry Tafida Wesley, known affectionately by some as Wesley Snipes, a recently retired commander of the Headquarters Nigerian Army Ordnance Corps.

His son’s distinguished career stands as a testament to the legacy of service instilled by the elder Tafida.

The celebration of Tafida’s life and service comes as the nation reflects on the broader contributions of its Armed Forces.

Events across the country this year include formal recognitions of gallantry and sacrifice at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day Gala Night in Abuja, where senior military leaders and veterans were honoured for their contributions to national security and development.

Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day was established to honour Nigeria’s servicemen and women, honouring those who gave their lives as well as those who continue to shape the nation’s defence.

The day also marks a historical milestone with the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970 and stands as a reminder of the enduring spirit of Nigeria’s military community.

As Nigeria commemorates this year’s remembrance and celebration, the story of RSM Wesley Tafida bridges generations, from the battlefields of the Second World War to the present day.
