Yobe CSO Apologises To NTA Reporter Over Assault

The Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Yobe Government House, CSP Yakin Zakari Deba has apologised for assaulting Mr. Babagana Kolo, a reporter with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Damaturu.

CSP Deba tendered his unreserved apology to the management of the NTA when he visited the station in Damaturu, the state capital on Friday.

Deba reportedly punched Kolo during a commotion at the premises of the state House of Assembly, hours before Governor Mai Mala Buni presented the 2026 budget proposal.

The CSO, who was visibly remorseful over the incident, said he was trying to control a large crowd from forcing its way into the gallery, when the unfortunate incident occurred.

“I was directed to ensure the security of about 73 attendees of the budget presentation. When my attention was drawn to the fact that some people were trying to flout the mandatory screening at the entrance, I quickly moved in to maintain law and order”.

According to him, “It was in that process that the unfortunate incident occurred. It was a mistake and I apologise for it”.

Mr. Rajab Mohammed Ismael, Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Yobe Council, commended Deba for the maturity he demonstrated in recognising his mistake and apologising to his victim accordingly.

He called on the CSO and other security operatives to always support journalists to perform their duties without any hindrance.

The NUJ Chairman also urged for collaboration between journalists and security operatives, saying that they should be partners in progress, not rivals at all.
