Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Akwa Ibom State chapter has identified the milestone achievements of the state government in the sports sector in 2025, citing the creation of the Ministry of Sports as a stand alone ministry as an initiative done in right direction.

It would be recalled that the Akwa Ibom State government, in the year under review, unbundled the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and created a stand alone Ministry of Sports for optimal coordination of sporting activities in the state.

At its January 2026 congress held at NUJ Press Centre in Uyo, members of SWAN resolved to commend the state Governor, Pastor Umo Eno for taking bold step in the development of sports sector.

In a communique issued after the congress, SWAN members also commended the Ministry of Sports with the Sports Icon, Elder Paul Bassey as the Commissioner, for setting agenda for robust sports development in the state.

The communique was signed by its chairman and Secretary, Comrade Uwem Ekoh and Comrade James Akpan, while the SWAN chapter’s chairman and secretary, Comrades Emmanuel Akpan and Theophilus Udo countersigned.

The congress, while reflecting on the relationship between the state government and SWAN, called for stronger synergy and partnership to promote sports in the state.

The congress affirmed the determination of members’ continued support for sports development and promotion in the state.

In solidarity with members, the congress congratulated an erstwhile National Officer of SWAN, Comrade Justice Udousoro on his recent honour by the National SWAN during the celebration of SWAN @ 60 as well as his successful retirement from the Akwa Ibom state civil service.

Congress also unanimously expressed appreciation to the National leadership of SWAN for displaying maturity and promoting unity by reinstating the Deputy National President of SWAN, Otuekong Bonny Nyong, and tasked the leadership to continue to exhibit love and team spirit.
