Damaturu Residents Hail Governor Buni Over Relocation To Modern Market

Residents of Damaturu have commended Yobe State Governor, His Excellency Hon. Mai Mala Buni, CON, and his Special Adviser on Security Matters, Brigadier-General Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), PhD, for the successful relocation of street traders to the Ibrahim Geidam Ultra Modern Market, describing the exercise as a major step towards restoring order, security and urban sanity in the state capital.

According to the Abdulmumin Kolo Gulani, Yobe State Focal Person on Cyber and Information Technologies, the commendation followed the high level of compliance recorded as many traders relocated from roadsides and informal locations to the modern market commencing business activities in an organised environment.

The General Manager of the Ibrahim Geidam Ultra Modern Market, Damaturu, Bulama Larema, confirmed that the relocation exercise has witnessed encouraging acceptance, with the market experiencing increased occupancy and orderly commercial activities.

Speaking during an assessment visit, Larema noted that the development reflects the positive response of traders and residents to the Yobe State Government’s directive aimed at improving security, enhancing urban order and promoting safe business practices in Damaturu metropolis.

Residents, he said, have expressed satisfaction with the exercise, noting that the removal of roadside trading has eased traffic congestion, improved public safety and enhanced the aesthetic outlook of the city.

He praised the Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Governor, Brigadier-General Dahiru Abdulsalam (Rtd), PhD for his effective leadership as Chairman of the Joint Task Force Committee on the Relocation of Street Traders, highlighting the committee’s professionalism, coordination and strict adherence to the rule of law.

“The level of compliance we are witnessing is highly commendable. Traders are relocating willingly, and the market is fast emerging as a central hub for organised, secure and sustainable commercial activities. This success reflects the commitment of the security adviser and the entire task force,” he said.

The General Manager also lauded Governor Mai Mala Buni for his vision and investment in the construction of the Ibrahim Geidam Ultra Modern Market, describing the facility as a landmark achievement that provides traders with a safe, modern and conducive environment for business.

According to him, the project underscores the governor’s commitment to economic development, urban renewal and public safety, stressing that the availability of modern facilities eliminates roadside trading.

He added that the presence of the Joint Task Force, supported by a Mobile and Revenue Court, has strengthened compliance, as defaulters are being addressed in line with existing laws.

Larema assured that the market management would continue to collaborate with relevant authorities to maintain cleanliness, orderliness and security within the market, while urging remaining traders yet to relocate, to comply fully with government directives.

He noted that the successful relocation exercise marks a significant milestone in the quest for a well-organised, secure and economically vibrant Damaturu, in line with the vision of the Yobe State Government.
