In a recent interview on Advocacy for Good Governance, on Thursday, September 17, 2026, Peter Obi, NDC Presidential Candidate, discussed his relationship with Nyesom Wike and the changing political positions of prominent figures ahead of the 2027 general election.
Obi was asked about Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, particularly his current support for President Bola Tinubu and his previous relationship with Obi.
Speaking about Wike’s change in political position, Obi said, “Nyesom Wike said, ‘He wanted to support me, but I didn’t agree to his terms.’” He explained that he had come across different accounts concerning Wike’s previous position toward him.
According to Obi, people have the right to change their political positions, adding that he did not know the reason why some people changed from supporting him to taking different positions.
The NDC presidential candidate said he had read claims that Wike wanted to support him but that he did not agree to the terms reportedly attached to the proposed support.
Obi, however, stated that he could not confirm the reason behind Wike’s change in political position. He maintained that he would not rely on assumptions when discussing the motives of another person.
The former Anambra State governor was also asked whether Wike’s appointment as FCT Minister had anything to do with the change. Obi dismissed the suggestion, repeatedly stating that he did not think the appointment was responsible.
Obi further noted that political relationships can change over time, as individuals are free to make decisions concerning who they support.
He concluded that he could only speak about what he had heard concerning Wike’s position, while the FCT Minister remained the person who could explain the actual reason for his political decision.
