According to a report by The Sun on Thursday, September 3, 2026, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that his supporters would not accept any form of intimidation during the 2027 general elections, stressing that voters must be allowed to exercise their rights without fear or pressure.
Obi made the statement on Thursday while speaking at a town hall meeting held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, where he addressed issues surrounding the conduct of the forthcoming elections and the need for greater vigilance among voters and political supporters.
The NDC presidential candidate maintained that the number of officials assigned to each polling unit should not be sufficient to intimidate voters.
According to him, no polling unit has more than five officials, making it difficult to justify any attempt by such a small number of individuals to overpower or intimidate a larger group of voters.
He argued that approximately 50 voters should be able to stand their ground against any attempt to interfere with the electoral process, particularly where the officials present at a polling unit are only a handful.
Obi therefore urged his supporters to remain firm and ensure that their votes are properly protected during the election.
He also raised concerns about possible attempts to manipulate the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal, commonly known as IReV, during the 2027 elections.
Obi said his supporters would be prepared to address any challenges that might arise with the electronic platform and would not allow technical difficulties to undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
Obi further explained that multiple systems would be available to ensure that electoral results could still be viewed and transmitted even if one platform encountered difficulties.
He said the existence of alternative IReV systems would make it more difficult for anyone to exploit technical problems as a means of frustrating the electoral process or preventing results from being properly accessed.
“They will try to manipulate the IReV, but it won’t be easy this time around. There will be so many IReVs; if their own doesn’t work, our own will work.
“If it has glitches, we will give them a new one that has no glitches, because by allowing them to continue, the glitches will glitch our lives,” he said.
