Analyst Questions US Strategy, Says Iran Still Has Capacity To Continue Retaliatory Attacks
According to a report by Al Jazeera on Wednesday September 2, 2026, security analyst Samir Puri has expressed serious concern about the possibility of the conflict between the United States and Iran escalating further following the resumption of US military strikes after a month-long pause.
Puri, a lecturer in war studies at King’s College London, said Iran’s continued military response was particularly worrying because the country had demonstrated both the capability and accuracy to retaliate effectively, despite the conflict having lasted for several months.
According to the analyst, there is currently little evidence that Iran is running out of the weapons and ammunition needed to sustain its military operations. He argued that Tehran still appears capable of maintaining its response to US and Israeli actions.
Puri also questioned Washington’s objectives, suggesting that the United States may be attempting to pressure Iran into making a clear and public concession. He warned that such an approach could create further tensions and increase the possibility of additional escalation.
The analyst also criticised President Donald Trump’s public statements about the conflict, describing the US president’s messaging about how the war should ultimately end as unclear and confusing.
Beyond the military situation, Puri pointed to Iran’s diplomatic relationships as evidence that Tehran is not as internationally isolated as some may believe. He noted that China, Russia, India and other countries showed support for Iran during the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit.
Puri therefore argued that Iran continues to maintain important international relationships despite the ongoing conflict.
He concluded that the United States appears to lack a clearly defined strategic objective, saying Washington currently seems “very confused” about what it ultimately wants to achieve in the confrontation with Iran.
