Tinubu: He Is Prioritizing Power, Retaining It Over And Above The Welfare Of Nigerians – Salihu

According to a report by The Cable on Monday, August 31, 2026, Ladan Salihu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, has urged President Bola Tinubu to resign from office, alleging that the President is more concerned about securing victory in the 2027 elections than addressing the welfare and wellbeing of Nigerians.

Salihu made the call while criticising what he described as the administration’s misplaced priorities amid the difficulties confronting citizens across the country.

Speaking during an interview on Monday, Salihu faulted President Tinubu’s latest trip outside the country, describing the timing as inappropriate.

He argued that the President and his administration should instead be concentrating their attention on the worsening economic situation and growing security concerns affecting Nigerians in different parts of the country.

The ADC chieftain maintained that the government had not fulfilled the “renewed hope” it promised Nigerians when it assumed office.

According to him, the country has continued to experience increasing levels of hunger, poverty and starvation, while insecurity has also remained a major challenge confronting the population.

Salihu further rejected the justification given for the President’s foreign trip, particularly the claim that he needed to travel abroad to recharge after spending months dealing with issues relating to security and the economy.

He questioned the appropriateness of such a decision at a period when many Nigerians are facing serious economic pressure and struggling to cope with rising living costs.

He also drew attention to the recent increase in the price of petrol, describing it as another indication of the hardship being experienced by citizens.

Salihu noted that the pump price of petrol had increased from approximately ₦1,200 to ₦1,310 per litre in some parts of the country, while prices had climbed even higher in certain states.

According to Salihu, President Tinubu’s decision to travel outside Nigeria amid the worsening economic hardship raises concerns about the priorities of the administration.

He argued that the government should be giving greater attention to the immediate challenges confronting Nigerians rather than concentrating heavily on political calculations and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Salihu said, “He is prioritizing power and retaining power over and above the welfare and well-being of Nigerians.”
