According to a report by The Cable on Monday, August 31, 2026, Timipre Sylva, former governor of Bayelsa State, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), bringing his involvement with the ruling party to an end.

Sylva disclosed his decision in a resignation letter addressed to the APC chairman of Ward 4 in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Monday.

In the letter, Sylva explained that his decision to leave the party was reached after consultations with members of his family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers.

He indicated that the decision followed careful consideration and discussions with people close to him before he formally communicated his withdrawal from the APC.

The former governor’s resignation comes amid developments surrounding an alleged plot against the government of President Bola Tinubu.

Sylva was named among those identified as suspects in connection with the alleged coup plot, placing his name among the individuals being investigated over the alleged attempt to topple the administration.

Sylva is also listed as one of the defendants in the 13-count charge filed by the Federal Government in relation to the alleged plot.

The charge forms part of the government’s legal action against individuals accused of involvement in the alleged plan to overthrow the government led by President Tinubu.

Against the backdrop of the political developments in the country, Sylva expressed confidence in the ability of Nigerians to determine a different political direction through the next general election.

He stated that the forthcoming electoral process would provide citizens with an opportunity to influence the political course of the country.

His resignation from the APC was formally communicated to the party leadership at the ward level in Brass LGA, Bayelsa State.

The letter was addressed specifically to the chairman of APC Ward 4, where Sylva was registered as a member, following the consultations he said he had held with his family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers.

Sylva said, “Moreover, I cannot, in all good conscience, continue to belong to a Party whose leaders believe that ‘all is fair in politics,’ and have consistently demonstrated that belief in practice.
