NFF Breaks Silence, Apologises To Tinubu, Nigerians Over Super Falcons WAFCON Setback

According to a report by The Vanguard on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has apologised to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians following the Super Falcons’ failure to secure direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, speaking on behalf of the federation’s Executive Committee, the Super Falcons and the wider Nigerian football family, said the federation understands the disappointment caused by the result.

“We recognise the disappointment this result has caused millions of Nigerians who passionately support and identify with the Super Falcons,” Gusau said.

The NFF specifically apologised to President Tinubu, acknowledging his support for Nigerian sports and women athletes. The federation also recalled the rewards, national honours, houses and reception given to the Falcons following their previous WAFCON success.

“It is therefore with genuine humility and regret that we acknowledge that we have not been able to repay that confidence with the outcome expected at this stage of the competition,” the statement said.

The federation extended its apology to the National Assembly, National Sports Commission, sponsors, stakeholders and supporters at home and abroad.

However, the NFF stressed that Nigeria’s World Cup hopes are still alive. According to the federation, the Falcons can pursue qualification through the CAF play-offs for two available tickets, followed by the FIFA play-off tournament.

“We must now regroup, learn from this setback and focus completely on the opportunity that remains,” Gusau said.

The NFF also promised to review the team’s preparation, technical planning, logistics and other aspects of its operations.

“We hear the disappointment of Nigerians, we share it and we accept our responsibility. But we are not giving up,” the federation stated, urging Nigerians to continue supporting the Super Falcons as they fight for a place at the 2027 World Cup.
