I’ve Been In Anambra for 42 Years, I Was Here Before Obi Joined Politics, He Doesn’t Hate Us – Haruna

Alhaji Garba Haruna, the Sarkin Hausa of Awka in Anambra State, has refuted allegations that former Governor Peter Obi harboured hostility towards or discriminated against people from the northern region during his tenure.

Speaking in an interview featured in a video by Advocacy for Good Governance, Haruna emphasized that his perspective comes from personal experience, having resided in Anambra for 42 years.

He noted that he was already living in the state before Obi entered politics, stating that he never observed any behaviour from the former governor indicating bias against northerners.

He also rejected claims that Obi ordered arrest of northern residents during the Boko Haram crisis, clarifying that such events did not occur within Anambra State.

Instead, Haruna highlighted that Obi maintained regular contact with northern community leaders and included them in official meetings while in office.

According to Haruna, the northern community pledged to prevent Boko Haram operatives from establishing a presence in the state if they ever attempted to enter. Community members also agreed to report any individuals suspected of terrorism, particularly around mosques.

He added that communication between Obi and northern community members continues to this day, underscoring that there has been no conflict or tension between them.

In his own words: “I’ve lived in Anambra State for 42 years now — long before Peter Obi got into politics. I never saw anything wrong with Peter Obi; he doesn’t have even a trace of hatred towards us.”
