The Failed Coup Was Supposed To Be Carried Out At Night – Arrested Colonel Ma’aji Reveals

According to a report by Premium Times on Monday, August 10, 2026, Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji has said the alleged plan to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government was to be carried out at night.
He made the disclosure in a statement to military investigators after his arrest in September 2025 over the alleged coup plot.
Ma’aji said the plan included placing the service chiefs under arrest at their residences. He explained that officers involved were asked to provide information and photographs as part of the preparations.
However, he said the plan was never fully formed because they were still waiting for resources and more officers and soldiers.
The colonel also claimed that many officers and soldiers were dissatisfied with the situation in the country.
He said the alleged movement was driven by concerns over insecurity, unemployment and poor governance. He maintained that the plan was motivated by a desire for change and not personal ambition.
However, Ma’aji and other defendants facing charges over the alleged plot have denied wrongdoing. The report noted that that statements made during the interrogations did not by themselves establish guilt.
The courts will determine the guilt or innocence of the accused based on the evidence presented during the ongoing proceedings.
