Kebbi Govt Takes Drastic Action Over Quelea Birds Invsion

Following the invasion of Quelea birds in Kebbi State, the state government has taken drastic measures to tackle the menace. State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Sciences, Shehu Muazu disclosed the measures taken by the government during a press briefing in his Ministry in Birnin Kebbi on Friday.

According to him, the invasion of the birds has caused a serious threat to the growing-up rice in farmlands across the five Local Government areas of the state.

The five Local Government areas include, Kalgo, Bunza, Birnin Kebbi, Gwandu and Argungu, he revealed.

Muazu further disclosed that as part of the measures, Governor Nasir Idris has directed his ministry to commence the aerial spraying operations against the invasion.

The Commissioner, however, warned against the use of unapproved chemicals, noting that indiscriminate approach could endanger public health and damage crops and environment.

He also warned farmers to keep away from their farmlands during the spraying operation.
