The wisdom, foresight and strategic decision of the Yobe State Critical Stakeholders to anoint and endorse Baba Malam Wali as the preferred successor to Governor Mai Mala Buni in 2027 is neither accidental nor driven by sentiment.
It is the product of careful reflection, grounded in the realities of governance, the demands of post-insurgency recovery and the imperative of sustaining the steady progress the state has recorded over the years.
Let me state, with utmost respect and sincerity, that all the aspirants — Sen. Ahmad Lawan, Sen. Musa Mustapha, Sen. Ibrahim Bomai, Kashim Tumsah, Lawan Kolo Geidam, and Usman Alkali — are individuals of proven capacity, leadership, and credibility. They are eminently qualified and possess the competence required to lead. Their aspirations are legitimate and their contributions to the state remain valued.
However, governance — especially in a state like Yobe State emerging from years of insurgency — requires more than competence. It demands deep institutional memory, continuity of vision, and a nuanced understanding of the delicate nexus between recovery, stability, and sustainable development.
No doubt, this is where Baba Malam Wali clearly stands out.
Having served as Secretary to the State Government for over a decade, his experience is not superficial. It is deeply rooted in the day-to-day realities of governance. He has been central — not peripheral — to policy formulation, programme implementation, and the coordination of government activities, particularly within the complex framework of post-insurgency recovery.
Baba Malam Wali understands, inside out, the workings of government and the unique challenges Yobe faces.
