In a compelling video aired by ESET TV, former Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba Usman, voiced grave concerns over the unfairness of the Nigeria Police Force’s Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), highlighting its detrimental impact on retired officers.
He revealed that the Managing Director of the police pension scheme earns a salary exceeding five times that of the serving Inspector General, exposing stark disparities in the system’s administration.
Baba emphasized that retirees, even after decades of service, receive less than half of their contributed funds, with senior officers like Commissioners of Police earning as little as ₦70,000 monthly. He noted that no retired officer receives more than ₦100,000, leaving many in financial distress and disillusioned.
In Baba’s words: “The industry is making a whole lot of money. Incidentally the MD of that our police pension, his salary is more than 5 times the salary of the IGP.”
This critique underscores deeper systemic issues within the CPS, which Baba argues fails to provide dignified retirement benefits. The paltry pensions, coupled with the scheme’s inequities, have fueled frustration among retirees, many of whom face poverty despite years of dedicated service.
Baba’s revelations align with broader calls for reform, as seen in recent protests by retired officers demanding an exit from the CPS in favor of a Defined Benefits Scheme, similar to that of other security agencies.
