The Voice of Nigeria (VON) has issued a formal apology following a regrettable incident in which the organization prematurely published an incorrect report announcing a Nigerian loss during the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final.
In a statement released by the Director General/CEO, Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, the international broadcaster acknowledged the widespread concerns and constructive feedback it received in the aftermath of the incident, which occurred on the night of Saturday, July 26, 2025.
The erroneous report falsely declared a Nigerian defeat before the conclusion of the match against Morocco, a statement that contradicted the actual outcome — Nigeria’s dramatic 3–2 comeback victory over the host nation, clinching a historic 10th WAFCON title.
“This inaccurate and unfortunate publication does not reflect our editorial standards,” Ndace stated, adding that “We sincerely apologize for the confusion and disappointment caused. The integrity of our journalism remains paramount, and we take this incident very seriously.
”While early internal reviews indicated a potential editorial lapse, the organization also revealed that investigations are ongoing into whether a cyber breach or hacking incident may have contributed to the unauthorized post.
“As a public institution operating in an increasingly digital world, we cannot rule out the possibility of a security breach or identity theft,” Ndace further explained.
“We are taking immediate steps to bolster the security of our digital platforms and safeguard against future threats. Importantly, VON clarified that it is not placing individual blame on the sports reporter initially linked to the story. Instead, the organization views the event as a systemic failure requiring institutional reform” he stated.
In response, VON has announced a series of internal overhauls designed to improve accuracy, accountability, and editorial resilience. These include the creation of a dedicated Investigative Desk, a Fact-Checking Unit, and a Monitoring and Evaluation Team.
Additionally, strategic staff redeployments are underway to enhance operational efficiency across its platforms. “These reforms are not just reactive measures,” Ndace emphasized.
“They are part of a broader commitment to repositioning VON as a modern, responsive, and globally respected media institution.
”Reaffirming VON’s dedication to its core principles of People, Platform, and Partnership, Ndace thanked Nigerians and the international audience for their vigilance, feedback, and support.
