Boat Mishap In Kebbi Results In 14 Fatalities

A canoe ferrying over 100 passengers has capsized on Yauri River in Yauri Local Government area of Kebbi State, the local authorities have said.

Chairman of Yauri Local Government area, Abubakar Shuaibu who confirmed the unfortunate incident told journalists on Monday that the incident occurred in Gumbi village in Gumbi Ward of Yauri Local Government area when passengers were on their way back after accompanying a bride to her matrimonial home at Gwarzo village in Ngaski Local Government area of Kebbi State.

“Unfortunately, so far, 14 people have been confirmed dead as a result of the mishap,” Shuaibu revealed.

The deceased have since been buried according to Islamic rites while Allah’s forgiveness for them was sought,” the chairman added.

Governor Nasir Idris has since extended his condolences to the families of the deceased, the Emir of Yauri, Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu Abdullahi as well as the Yauri Local Government Council.

Our Correspondent gathered that as at the time of filing this report, a rescue team was still in search of more victims from the river.
