AFAN Hails FG’s Support To Farmers Following Deficit In Production Cost

The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) has commended the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, for the timely announcement of the Federal Government’s intervention to support Nigerian farmers following the recent drop in food prices below production cost.

Hon. Muhammed Magaji Gettado, who is the National President, All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) said in a statement that while the gradual reduction in food prices is a welcome relief to Nigerian consumers and aligns with the Federal Government’s food security objectives, it has significantly affected farmers who are now compelled to sell their produce at prices far below their cost of production.

He said, the situation, if not urgently addressed, could discourage farmers, reduce future production, and also threaten the sustainability of the nation’s agricultural sector.

The Association therefore welcomes the Honourable Minister’s assurance that the Federal Government is putting in place, concrete measures to cushion the impact on farmers.

AFAN suggested that, the measures should include strategic produce offtake, strengthened commodity aggregation, access to affordable financing, targeted input support, and expanded market stabilization mechanisms aimed at protecting farmers from losses while sustaining national food supply.

According to the President, AFAN believes that this intervention reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to balancing the interests of both farmers and consumers, in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for agricultural transformation, rural development and economic stability.

He reiterated AFAN’s readiness to collaborate with both Federal and State governments and other relevant agencies to ensure effective implementation of the proposed support measures.

The Association emphasized that structured engagement with genuine farmer groups remains critical to achieving lasting solutions.

The AFAN president, however, called on farmers nationwide to remain resilient, assuring them that the Federal Government’s intervention will help stabilize the sector, restore confidence, and guarantee sustainable agricultural production in the country.
